While buying a cheaper steak can help you stretch your budget, if you don’t know how to cook it, you will end up with a piece of steak that can be tough to chew. Cubing the steak will help make it more tender and easier to chew when it has been prepared.
How to Cube Steak
Cubed steak isn’t steak cut into cube shapes, but it is a steak that has been tenderized either by pounding on it with a meat tenderizer or running it through an electric tenderizer. You can either tenderize the steak yourself or you can buy it already tenderized in the store. Most cubed steaks are cuts of meat like top round or top sirloin, which are often the most inexpensive steaks cuts in the supermarket.
How to Cook Cubed Steak
There are several ways you can prepare cubed steak for a meal. Chicken fried steak is usually made with cubed steak, as is Swiss steak. Cubed steak can be fried, baked or even prepared in a slow cooker to produce a tender steak that is easy to cut, easy to chew and very tasty.
Making Chicken Fried Cube Steak
A chicken fried or country fried steak can be cooked for breakfast, lunch or dinner. Many people like to have it with scrambled eggs, country gravy and biscuits for a hearty breakfast. Country gravy is white gravy rather than brown gravy that is commonly served with beef. Making this type of steak is easy to do.
After tenderizing the steak, if you didn’t buy it already tenderized, cut the steak into smaller portions of about four ounces each. Depending on the size of the steak you’ve bought, that could be two to four steaks. Set them aside and prepare a flour dredge by using about a cup of flour, mixing in salt and pepper to taste.
Many people use buttermilk, but you can also whisk two eggs in a large bowl or pan to coat the cube steak. Once you coat both sides in egg, coat the steak by putting it in the flour mixture. Dredge the steak on both sides and place it into a hot skillet with enough oil to fry the steak.
When the steak has been fried, it should have a golden brown batter on it from the egg wash and flour dredge. Afterwards, make gravy and serve the steak with mashed potatoes and green beans for dinner.
