There are many ways to cook and enjoy Portobello mushrooms. These mushrooms, which are large Crimini mushrooms, are firm with a delicate flavor and a meaty texture. Some people cook and eat them as a meat substitute for hamburgers or on pizza.
Preparing Portobello Mushrooms
Portobello mushrooms can be cooked on a grill, in a pan on the stove or they can even be baked. Before you cook them, you need to thoroughly clean the mushrooms using either a using a mushroom brush to carefully remove the dirt from the mushroom or you can use a paper towel to remove the dirt. Do not wet or dampen mushrooms to clean them.
Grilling Portobello Mushrooms
Once the dirt has been removed from the surface of the mushrooms, lightly coat both sides of the mushrooms with olive oil. After it has been coated with oil, salt and pepper the mushroom to taste and place it directly onto a hot grill to cook. Leave it on the grill for five to six minutes and then turn it onto the other side for another five to six minutes. It should be cooked through and it will have a firm texture.
Sautéing Portobello Mushrooms
To prepare these mushrooms to go onto pizza, in spaghetti or on any other dishes, you can sauté them in a pan. They sauté quickly, but you will need to constantly stir and move them around in the pan as they cook. Once the mushrooms have been cleaned, cut them into slices and add them to a heated pan.
Cook the mushrooms over high heat in butter or in a high-heat tolerant oil like grapeseed oil. Stirring them constantly, allowing them to cook for about five minutes. They should be tender after they have finished sautéing.
Roasted Portobello Mushrooms
These mushrooms can be easily roasted in the oven as well. Once they have been cleaned, carefully pull the stem from the mushroom and then scraped out the gills, which is the black put on the underside of the mushroom. Score an “X” into the center of each mushroom and then brush lightly with oil.
Salt and pepper to taste, the place the mushrooms on a baking sheet, gill side up, and place it into preheated 400 degree Fahrenheit oven. Bake for 10 minutes and flip them, baking them for another 20 minutes. Let them cool slightly and you can slice them before serving the mushrooms.
